Australians took a record 17.3 million caravan and camping trips in 2025, according to Tourism Research Australia. Nick and Therese Bikeman bought a new Volkswagen campervan for $100,000 in late 2020 after years of bicycle touring and tent camping. They say the compact van, with dark tinting, solar panels and bike racks, is easier to manoeuvre than a towed caravan and allows discreet camping in more locations.
