How to read the plate
A Cypriot plate is three letters and three digits (MAA 001). Since 2013 the month and year of first registration are printed small between them (06 over 13) — a date, not a region. Only letters common to the Greek and Latin alphabets are used. On the left is the blue EU band with the letters CY.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The current series started in 2013 with MAA. Before 1930 plates carried district letter codes: F for Famagusta, K for Kyrenia, L for Larnaca, LL for Limassol, N for Nicosia, P for Paphos. The north of the island, controlled by the unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, uses its own plate system.
