Vanlife culture emerges as a new geek lifestyle trend

Vanlife has deep historical roots rather than being a modern trend. The practice of living in mobile dwellings traces back to medieval merchants and Romani vardos, evolving into horse-drawn caravans like William Gordon Stables' 'The Wanderer' in the 19th century. In the 20th century, it shifted from necessity during the Great Depression to a counterculture symbol in the 1960s, gaining global visibility post-2010 through social media and the #vanlife hashtag.

Full-time van life involves practical difficulties rarely shown on social media. Persistent challenges include cramped space, struggles to find legal parking, exposure to weather extremes, and lack of basic amenities. However, the freedom of travel and lower living costs continue to draw people to this lifestyle.

The author conducted a ten-day experiment to test if living in a camper van is compatible with a standard office job schedule. He rented a fully equipped Mercedes Sprinter and worked remotely from various locations. The test revealed that this lifestyle offers greater freedom but also significant practical challenges, including isolation issues and on-road breakdowns.
