Wanaka residents are calling for a freedom camping ban at a popular lakeside spot, saying visitors are defecating in the bushes, doing laundry in the lake and dumping rubbish. Only three spots are designated for overnight camping on Beacon Point Road overlooking Lake Wanaka, and some residents say the site is overwhelmed by campers. Local councils cannot use bylaws to completely ban freedom camping across their region but can regulate it. Sandy Hazledine, who lives near the Beacon Point site, opposes freedom camping there.
