Namibia's Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has reversed its decision to restrict self-drive access to Deadvlei. According to a notice dated May 2, visitors in 4x4 vehicles can enter independently, and may also use the concessionaire's shuttle. Buses and trucks remain prohibited.
The concessionaire, who holds the shuttle contract, is contesting the ministry's position, asserting that his contractual rights remain in force. Tourism industry representatives have expressed concern about a possible monopoly and its impact on small businesses and demand, as well as potential price increases.
