How to read the plate
A Malagasy plate has white characters on black: four digits and one to three letters (8847 TAK). The first letter is the province index: T for Antananarivo, A for Toamasina, F for Fianarantsoa, M for Mahajanga, D for Antsiranana, U for Toliara. Numbers run from 0001 L to 9999 L, then LA…, then LAA…; Antananarivo is already on three letters.

The system with a province letter dates from 1959. In 2009 the six provinces were replaced by 22 regions, but the letters on plates stayed the same and match the ISO 3166-2 codes. Earlier systems (from 1921, on the French pattern) have not been studied in detail.
