Custom text: real plates never carry this combination.
This image is not a license plate: it must not be fitted to a vehicle and does not mean the combination is available.
How to read the plate
A Cape Verdean plate starts with two letters for the island of first registration: ST for Santiago, SV for São Vicente, SL for Sal, BV for Boa Vista and so on. Then come two digits and two letters or digits, with dots between the groups: ST-65-BC. Private plates have white characters on black with the flag on the left. The example shown is an army plate: FA stands for the Armed Forces, not an island.

History
In colonial times plates followed the Portuguese scheme CVx-1234: CVB for the Barlavento (Windward) Islands and CVS for the Sotavento (Leeward) Islands. It was later replaced by codes for individual islands; the sources do not give the exact date. The code MA for Maio appears in only one hobbyist source, with a question mark.
