How to read the plate
A Burkinabè private plate has two digits, two letters and four digits (11 GK 1844), black on white. On the right is a ring with the map of the country in flag colours and the letters BF. The first two digits are commonly taken to be a territorial code (11 for Ouagadougou), but no list of codes or official explanation could be found. Commercial vehicles have white-on-blue plates in the 12-A-1234 format.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The current system dates from 1984 or 1995 — sources disagree. Before 1984, when the country was called Upper Volta, plates carried the letters HV.
