How to read the plate
A Botswana plate is written as one run without spaces: B (Botswana), three digits and three letters (B962ATH), black on white in a black border. Series are assigned nationally by the registrar, and the plate shows no region. Government vehicles get BX plates and the army BDF.

History
The current plates have been issued since 2008, although the B123ABC format itself is older. In the Bechuanaland Protectorate the codes depended on the town (BPA for Francistown, BPD for Gaborone and so on, BPX for the government), and they remained in use for some time after independence in 1966.
