How to read the plate
A Romanian plate is a one- or two-letter county code, two digits and three letters (CJ 12 ABC). County codes match ISO 3166-2:RO: CJ is Cluj, TM is Timiș, GL is Galați. Bucharest has the single-letter code B and may have three digits (B 123 ABC). The last group never contains Q and never starts with I or O. On the left is the blue EU band with the letters RO.

History
The current format dates from 1992, the EU format from 2007, and the typeface was updated in 2024. In 1966–1992 a plate looked like 1-B-12345: the first number gave the vehicle type and the letters the county (from 1968 almost the same codes as today). From the 1980s Ilfov was registered as 9-B-…, and its own code IF returned in 2005.
