How to read the plate
A North Macedonian plate starts with the two-letter region code in Latin letters: SK for Skopje, OH for Ohrid, BT for Bitola, TE for Tetovo. Then a small square repeats the code and the series letters in Cyrillic, followed by four digits and two letters (OH 1731 AF). A region is a central municipality together with its neighbours; 34 codes are in use. On the left is a blue field with NMK, without the EU stars.

History
The current format was introduced on 20 February 2012; in 2019, after the country was renamed, the band changed from MK to NMK. The 1993–2012 plates («SK 123-456») use the same codes, except that Štip had ŠT — replaced by ST in 2012; the old plates are still valid. Later additions were VV (2013), DB, DK, KR, MB, MK, PS, VA (2015), DH, KS (2019) and PE (2020). Before 1993 Yugoslav plates were used — for example TV for Titov Veles.
