How to read the plate
Since 2008 Egyptian plates have two tiers: a coloured band on top with EGYPT and مصر, and below it digits on the left and one to three Arabic letters on the right. The band colour shows the vehicle type (light blue for private cars, orange for taxis, red for trucks), not the region. The governorate is given by the first letter or pair of letters: س is Alexandria, ق Qalyubia, ط س Suez, ص ق Luxor; the remaining letters are random. Cairo and Giza have no letter of their own and are recognised by the format: three digits and three letters in Cairo, four digits and two letters in Giza.

History
The current plates were introduced in August 2008. Before that, plates were purely numeric and issued by governorate, with the vehicle type written out in Arabic (ملاكي for private, أجرة for taxi). Some older plates carried a Latin abbreviation of the governorate on the left: ALX for Alexandria, C for Cairo, GZ for Giza, PTS for Port Said.
