How to read the plate
The Sudanese plate is bilingual, with SUDAN and السودان across the top. A separate cell on the left holds a digit and an Arabic letter with the same in Latin script below (٧ خ / 7 KH); on the right is the serial number in Eastern Arabic digits with Western digits underneath. According to the sources the letter stands for the state: خ / KH is Khartoum. What the digit before the letter means is not explained, and no full table of letters for the other states could be found.

History
The current design was introduced in 2009, in Khartoum from January 2009. From 1984 to 2000 embossed 10×49 cm plates were issued, and in 2000 the 16×32 cm format followed. Until 2009 the plate showed the vehicle type in Arabic (ملاكي for private); the sources do not describe any region codes of the older systems.
