How to read the plate
In Canada every province and territory issues its own plates: each shows its name and motto and has its own design, while the serial carries no provincial code. Ontario uses four letters and three digits in blue on white (CBPC 344) with “Yours to Discover”, Quebec has “Je me souviens”, British Columbia “Beautiful British Columbia”. In Quebec and Alberta passenger cars carry a rear plate only.

Provinces have issued their own plates since the early 20th century. Base designs change from time to time — Ontario in 1973, 1997 and 2020, Quebec in 1979, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nunavut in 2025 — and old plates remain in use. The Northwest Territories plate is shaped like a bear, and Nunavut had a bear-shaped plate from 1999.
