How to read the plate
A Dutch plate has black characters on yellow, with the blue EU band and the letters NL. Six characters are split by hyphens into three groups following one of 14 patterns (sidecodes): 4-KSK-02, 19-GR-LL, XX-999-X. Only consonants are used, without C, Q and W. No region is shown: the RDW issues numbers sequentially nationwide; some series letters indicate the vehicle type (V for vans), not a place.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
From 1906 to 1951 plates showed a province letter and a number: A Groningen, B Friesland, D Drenthe, G North Holland, H South Holland, K Zeeland, L Utrecht, M Gelderland, N North Brabant, P Limburg and so on. In 1951 all of them were replaced by the nationwide RDW system without regions, and the old plates have practically disappeared.
