In Brief

Japanese tuners have unveiled two compact camper vans based on mini trucks: the Dune Rover on a Daihatsu Hijet and the Suzuki Carry. Both models are small but differ in price and features.

Japanese companies are expanding the niche of ultra-compact camper vans based on kei trucks. Two new models — the Dune Rover by Direct Cars and the Suzuki Carry — offer different approaches to living space.

Dune Rover (Daihatsu Hijet)

  • Length: 3.4 meters
  • Features: two double beds, mini-kitchen, air conditioning
  • No toilet
  • Price: from €32,100

Suzuki Carry 4WD

  • Length: 3.72 meters
  • Weight: 1,180 kg
  • Drive: all-wheel drive
  • Layout: kitchen module and fold-out sofa
  • Price: from ¥3.9 million (approx. €21,000)

Both models accommodate two people. The Dune Rover is more expensive and offers more sleeping space but lacks a toilet, while the Suzuki Carry is cheaper and comes with all-wheel drive.

Renovated trailer park in Japan combines tourism with disaster relief

The Suzuka Kenko no Mori RV Resort in Suzuka, Nagano Prefecture, has reopened with 25 travel trailers. Each 37 sq m unit includes an induction stove, bathroom, and toilet. The site features a 12,000-liter water tank and portable batteries, enabling 10 households to live normally for a week during water or power outages. Operator Cumberland Japan aims to deploy the trailers as emergency housing after earthquakes and floods, and has been selected for a Ukraine reconstruction project to send trailers there by February 2027.
