A man died of leptospirosis in Berkeley, California, in May after living in a severely rat-infested RV. A woman who lived with him also contracted the disease but recovered after a lengthy hospitalization. City officials confirmed these are the first human cases of leptospirosis in Berkeley in over a decade. The couple had been trapping, feeding, and breeding wild rats inside the RV, from which nearly 200 rats were removed.
