In May 2025, one person died from leptospirosis in Berkeley, California, a bacterial disease spread through rodent urine. A second occupant of the same RV survived after prolonged hospitalization. City officials stated that nearly 200 rats were found inside the vehicle, located near a homeless encampment, where the residents were trapping, feeding, and breeding wild rats. The infested RV was towed and destroyed.
