In Brief

Welsh authorities have begun enforcement against Ridgeway Resort for failing to provide affordable housing land. In Australia, two dozen long-term residents of Rose Gardens caravan park were evicted after a change of ownership.

In Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (Wales), authorities have started enforcement action against Ridgeway Resort (formerly Buttyland) in Manorbier. The reason is failure to meet conditions of a planning permission granted in 2021 after an appeal. The permission required transferring land for 14 affordable housing units to the local housing authority. As of May 2025, 17 static caravans had been installed on the site, 16 of which were occupied, but the land transfer had not taken place. The development committee has approved starting legal proceedings to enforce the agreement.

In Western Australia, two dozen long-term residents of Acclaim Rose Gardens (also known as Rose Gardens) caravan park in Albany were evicted after the property was sold in early 2025. The new owner, RAC Tourism Assets, purchased the land from the state government on a 'freehold' basis. Residents were offered lump-sum payments of up to 25,000 Australian dollars, but some, including a cancer patient, were left without permanent housing. Most tenants were on monthly leases, which under the Residential Parks Act 2006 did not protect them from eviction when the landowner changed.

The application is on public exhibition until June 24.

Caravan toilet chemicals strain regional wastewater systems in Australia

A Flinders University study found that the surge in caravan and camper usage in Australia increases pressure on regional wastewater treatment plants due to chemicals in toilet systems. A survey of 160 caravan users showed that 65% regularly use detergent, deodorizer, and sanitizer products, with bronopol-based ones being most popular; bronopol can break down into formaldehyde and other toxic compounds. During peak holiday periods, higher volumes of chemically treated wastewater may reduce treatment efficiency and affect nearby environments.
