How to read the plate
A private car plate in South Korea has three digits, a Hangul syllable and four digits (123가 4568); before 2019 there were two digits at the front (12가 3456). Private plates have carried no region since 2004. The province or city name (서울, 부산, 경기…) on the left survives only on commercial vehicles — taxis, buses and trucks.

In 1973–2003 the abbreviated city or province name in Hangul stood at the top of every plate (서울 12가 3456); before 1973 plates looked like «서울 12-3456». Since 2004 private plates are national; the long European-size plate came in 2006 and three leading digits in 2019. Motorcycle plates showed the region until March 2026.
