How to read the plate
A North Korean plate shows the region on the left — two Hangul syllables abbreviating the province or city (평양 for Pyongyang, 평남 for South Pyongan, 함북 for North Hamgyong), followed by digits. State organisations' cars have two and four digits joined by a dash (평양 74-1551); since 2016 these plates are blue, before that white. Private plates are yellow (평양-4506), and diplomatic ones begin with 외 and carry no region. There is no official description — the data come from photos and reference works.

North Korean plates have shown the region since 1947 in various forms. Until 1992 it was followed by up to four digits (평양 1450); in 1992–2016 by two groups of digits joined by a dash (평남 48-366), with white state plates. The current series dates from 2016.
