Series and number
Letters and digits — the registration itself.
A Polish plate starts with a two- or three-letter county (powiat) code. The first letter is the voivodeship (W for Masovia, K for Lesser Poland, S for Silesia, P for Greater Poland and so on), the next ones the county or city: a two-letter code usually means a city with county rights and a three-letter one a rural county, though there are exceptions. After the hologram sticker come 4–5 more digits and letters in one of 14 patterns (WI 255RY is Warsaw-Śródmieście, KR 8FK36, DW 12345); this part never uses B, D, I, O or Z. Most voivodeships also have a reserve letter (A for Masovia, J for Lesser Poland, I for Silesia), but such codes are still rarely issued. The code reflects the place of registration, and the plate can be kept after a move.

History
The current system has been in use since 1 May 2000, after the reform that created 16 voivodeships and the counties. From 1976 to 2000 black plates carried the code of one of the 49 former voivodeships (e.g. WA or WE for Warsaw, KR for Kraków), and an even older system ran in 1956–1976; such plates have almost vanished. The reserve voivodeship letters V, J, A, Y, X, I, M were added later; the current list of codes is annex 13 to the 2024 regulation. The codes STY and NOG belonged to counties that existed in 1999–2002.
