How to read the plate
A Lithuanian plate has three letters and three digits (ECK 649). It carries no region today: since 2004 the letters are issued without any link to a place. Q, W and X are not used, as they are not in the Lithuanian alphabet. The inspection stickers go between the groups, and on the left is the blue EU band with LT.

History
The ABC 123 format has been used since 1993. Until 2004 the second letter stood for the county of first registration (e.g. AKA 123 for Kaunas). Plates stay with the car, so such numbers are still seen on vehicles from the 1990s and early 2000s. The counties lost their administrative role in 2010 but remain in ISO 3166-2.
