How to read the plate
A Mauritian private plate is a serial number, the month-of-registration code and the last two digits of the year: 1234 JN 12 (JN for January … DE for December). The letters mean the month, not a region. Government plates read GM 3345. The classic plate has silver characters on black with a MAURITIUS tab; modern private plates may be black on white or yellow.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The month and year of registration have been shown on the plate since about 1996. The sources give no information on earlier systems.
