Unauthorised traveller camps in Colchester and Felixstowe

Two separate incidents of unauthorised traveller encampments have been reported in the UK, prompting police and council involvement.

Colchester, Essex

An unauthorised traveller camp was discovered at Hilly Fields nature reserve in Colchester. Residents reported it in the morning, raising concerns about safety and land use. The number of caravans on site has not yet been determined. The incident has been referred to Essex Police; illegal occupation of land carries a fine of up to £2,500 or up to three months' imprisonment.

Felixstowe, Suffolk

In Felixstowe, a group of travellers has positioned at least two caravans and accompanying vehicles on municipal land at Gosford Way. Felixstowe Town Council has notified the Norfolk and Suffolk Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Service, which will assess the situation to determine next steps. Suffolk County Council has also been informed, and Suffolk Police are monitoring the situation. Similar unauthorised encampments occurred at other sites in Felixstowe in 2023 and 2021.

After the Longwood fire in Ruffy, Australia, dozens of residents lost their homes and now live in caravans. The fire destroyed 41 dwellings and 92 structures. Residents like Rio Crupi and Rob and Bron Jamieson expect to rebuild over one to two years due to a shortage of builders. Authorities have provided over $420 million in support, but the community says more is needed.

Scotland fan travels in 1977 motorhome with football graphics

John McIntosh from Falkirk bought a 1977 Airstream Argosy motorhome decorated with images of Scottish footballers, including Archie Gemmill, Graeme Souness, and Scott McTominay. Instead of traveling to the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, he decided to tour Scotland to meet former colleagues and fans. McIntosh cited a lack of understanding of soccer in the US as the reason for not attending the tournament.
