Since 2020, sales of motorhomes and caravans in the Netherlands have grown significantly due to the coronavirus pandemic, which prompted people to seek safe holiday options. The country now has 208,300 registered motorhomes. However, owners face several challenges.
Restrictions and taxes
In Nijkerk, motorhomes can be parked on the street for no more than three consecutive days, and sleeping in them is prohibited. Since 2024, the vehicle tax for motorhomes has doubled, increasing annual costs to €2,000 and boosting the supply of used vehicles.
Fires
On the night of April 29, 2026, a fire broke out in a parking lot in Monterosso (Bergamo, Italy), likely due to a short circuit. The fire completely destroyed a motorhome and one car, damaging two others. Three fire brigades removed gas cylinders from the motorhome, preventing an explosion. A tree and part of a nearby football field fence were also damaged.
In the Netherlands, two fires occurred in January 2026: in Wildervank, a camper was completely destroyed on a vacant lot (cause unknown), and in Venlo, a camper burned down on a plot near Bevrijdingsweg (cause unknown, popping sounds heard during extinguishing).
