Court orders eviction of a plot in Ibiza occupied by caravans

Spain's Civil Guard has reiterated specific regulations for recreational vehicles. Caravans are subject to speed limits of 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on regular roads, and carrying passengers in a trailer is prohibited. Heavy caravans require their first technical inspection after six years, while motorhomes need it after four years, with subsequent inspections every one to two years.

Vehicle inspections for campers and motorhomes have different requirements based on vehicle category. Category M motorhomes require their first inspection after 4 years, then every 2 years, and annually after 10 years. Category N campers need annual inspections from registration, increasing to twice yearly after 10 years, raising costs and limiting travel flexibility.

Residents of the coastal area of Castillo del Romeral report over 70 caravans and camper vans parked in a single weekend. They complain about occupation of public space, excessive water use, and noise. Local authorities acknowledge the complexity of the issue due to legal restrictions that prevent simply banning parking of such vehicles and announce increased police surveillance for Easter.

Spain's General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has tightened regulations for motorhomes and campervans. Key changes involve inspection frequency: motorhomes maintain a schedule similar to passenger cars, while campervans must undergo inspection annually until 10 years old, and then every six months. Municipalities are authorized to restrict parking of such vehicles in urban areas.

Around 50 motorhomes and camper vans occupy the dry riverbed in Torrox, creating public health risks due to waste dumping. A new 24-hour parking limit rule is ineffective as police record license plates but do not enforce sanctions. Local residents have complained to the town hall for years, proposing waste disposal points and increased patrols.

Spanish authorities are tightening parking rules for campers and motorhomes due to overcrowding in tourist areas. Fines of up to €3,000 target those who set up furniture or create impromptu camps on public land, which is classified as illegal camping. Stricter restrictions are being implemented in natural parks, such as Cabo de Gata in Almería.
