How to read the plate
A Malaysian plate has white characters on black: letters and 1–4 digits (PFQ 5217). The first letter is the state or federal territory: A for Perak, B for Selangor, J for Johor, P for Penang, V for Kuala Lumpur, F for Putrajaya; the other letters are the series, and when series run out a letter is added at the end. In Sarawak Q is followed by a division letter (QA Kuching, QM Miri), in Sabah S by an office letter (SJ Kota Kinabalu, SW Tawau); Langkawi island has its own code KV. Taxis get the prefix H, the military Z.

History
State letters on the peninsula have been used since 1948; before that the Straits Settlements had S (Singapore), P (Penang) and M (Malacca). Sarawak switched to the Q prefix in 1991 and Sabah to S in the 1980s. In 2016 Kuala Lumpur replaced the exhausted W with V, and Putrajaya got F at the same time.
