How to read the plate
A Thai plate has a series of two Thai consonants and a number of 1–4 digits on top, with the province name written out in Thai script below (กว 2283 / ภูเก็ต — Phuket). There are no province codes, only the word. Bangkok ran out of series back in 2012, so a digit is added before the letters (1กข 1234). Pattaya has no plates of its own — it uses those of Chon Buri — while Betong district issues its own.

History
The province name has been on plates for a long time and the system has never been replaced; the current format was set by a ministerial regulation of 2011 (Buddhist year 2554). For trips abroad a Latin plate marked THAILAND is issued, with the series letters transliterated and the province shown as a numeric code.
