How to read the plate
An Indonesian plate starts with a one- or two-letter region code (B for Jakarta, D for Bandung, AB for Yogyakarta), followed by 1–4 digits and 1–3 series letters (B 1234 ABC); below are the month and year when the registration expires. The codes follow the former Dutch residencies, so on Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi one province is split into several codes. The first series letter (the last one in Central Java) narrows down the regency or city of registration. Since 2022–2023 plates are white with black characters; they used to be black.

History
The region codes go back to the colonial system of residencies (from the 1920s). The codes BR (replaced by KB), DS (Papua switched to PA in 2016, West Papua to PB in 2013) and DF, East Timor's code until 1999, have been dropped. In 2023–2024 the new Papuan provinces received the codes PG, PS, PT and PY.
