How to read the plate
An Icelandic plate has two letters followed by three characters — a letter or digit and two digits (MO R58, MR 109). The characters are blue on white, with the Icelandic flag and IS on the left and the inspection sticker between the groups. There is no region in the number: the combination is assigned at random and stays with the vehicle for life. The letters C, Q and W are not used.

History
The current system has been in use since 1989. From 1938 to 1988 the first letter stood for a county (sýsla) or town: R for Reykjavík, A for Akureyri, Y for Kópavogur and so on. Such plates survive on vintage cars and as vanity plates.
