How to read the plate
A Finnish plate has two or three letters, a dash and one to three digits (KRR-442, AB-12). The plate is shorter than the usual European one — 442 × 118 mm — with the blue EU band and FIN on the left. There is no region in the number: since 1989 plates have been issued without geography. The exception is Åland, which has its own register and blue ÅL plates with five digits.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The ABC-123 format appeared in 1972. From 1922 to 1972 the first letter stood for the province (A, B, C Helsinki, T Turku, O Oulu, L Lapland and so on), and from 1972 to 1989 the first letter showed the place of first registration. Such plates are now rarely seen. Since 13 September 2025 Åland's international code has been AX.
