How to read the plate
A Norwegian plate has two letters and five digits (DN 96650). The letters are the series of the Statens vegvesen traffic station where the vehicle was first registered: D for Oslo, SN to TE for Bergen, for example. Since 2007 owners may take any station's series, so the link between letters and region is not strict. Electric vehicles get nationwide series starting with E. On the left is a blue band with the Norwegian flag and N.

History
The current two-letter system dates from 1971. From 1913 to 1971 a single letter stood for the amt (county): A for Oslo, B for Østfold, C for Akershus … Z for Finnmark; such plates are still seen on veteran cars. The EL series (1999–2016) was the first nationwide series for electric vehicles. Since 9 February 2017 four-digit numbers no longer carry any geography.
