How to read the plate
A Swedish plate has three letters and three digits (PXO 755); since 2019 the last character may be a letter (MLB 84A). There is no region in the number: the combination is issued with no link to a place and stays with the vehicle for good. The letters I, Q, V, Å, Ä and Ö are not used, and the final letter is never O. All characters are the same width; on the left is the blue EU band with S.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The current system dates from 1973. From 1907 to 1973 the plate began with the county letter (länsbokstav): A for Stockholm, C for Uppsala, M for Malmöhus, O for Göteborg och Bohus and so on. After 1974 all old plates were replaced, so none remain on the road; the letters live on in the ISO 3166-2 codes of Swedish counties.
