How to read the plate
A DR Congo plate reads as four digits and two letters, followed on the right, after a vertical bar, by the two-digit province code (8762AA | 19, where 19 is North Kivu). Code 01 stands for Kinshasa; the other 25 provinces are numbered alphabetically. On the left are the flag and the letters CGO.

History
The current plates have been issued since 2009, and the codes of the 26 provinces appeared after the 2015 reform split the former 11 provinces. Before 1979 the plate bore a yellow star, one or two letters and up to four digits. From 1979 to 2009 the number began with a two-letter province code: KN for Kinshasa, BC (earlier BZ) for Bas-Congo, KT (earlier SH) for Katanga and so on.
