How to read the plate
A Tanzanian private plate has black characters on yellow: the letter T, three digits and three series letters (T 995 AGT), with the flag and a round hologram on the left. The first letter shows the part of the union: T for mainland Tanzania, Z for Zanzibar (Z 101 AA, a separate design with the Zanzibar flag and the letters EAZ). On the mainland the region is not visible — series are national.

History
From 1933 a number consisted of town letters and four digits (DS for Dar es Salaam), in the 1980s of T, two letters and four digits, and in the 1990s of three letters and three digits. Zanzibar formerly had ZNZ 1234 plates and Pemba PBA 1234. The list of town codes (AR, DS, MZ and others) is known only from an amateur reference.
