How to read the plate
An Argentine MERCOSUR plate (since 2016) has two letters, three digits and two more letters: AJ 707 RU. A blue band on top carries REPUBLICA ARGENTINA, the MERCOSUR mark on the left and the flag on the right. The province is not shown: series run nationwide, as they did on the ABC 123 plates issued in 1995–2016 that are still on the road. Only pre-1995 plates showed the province, as the first letter — the same letter as the province's ISO code (B Buenos Aires Province, C City of Buenos Aires, X Córdoba); I, Ñ and O were not used.

History
Until 1964–1969 plates were issued by municipalities in many designs. From 1964 (Federal Capital) and 1968–1969 (provinces) until 1994 a plate showed the province letter and up to six or seven digits (B 1234567), white on black. Mendoza switched to the nationwide ABC 123 plates on 1 December 1994, the rest on 1 January 1995; MERCOSUR plates have been issued since April 2016.
