How to read the plate
Since 2007 a Chilean plate has four consonants and two digits: BB·BB★10; a dot splits the letters into pairs, and a shield with a star separates them from the digits. CHILE is spaced out along the bottom; the FE-Schrift typeface has been used since 2014. The region is not shown: a single national series (Placa Patente Única) has been in force since 1985. Older plates of the same system have two letters and four digits (DI★82·41).

History
Until 31 December 1984 plates were issued by municipalities and showed the name of the commune (such as SANTIAGO or TALCA). In 1981–1984 the first letter pointed to a group of regions. A single national series has been used since 1985, and the four-letter format since 2007. Light trailers on municipal registers still carry the commune name.
