Overnight rules for campers and motorhomes tightened in Portugal
Portugal has tightened regulations for overnight stays in motorhomes and camper vans. Since 2021, a law prohibits sleeping in a vehicle between 9 PM and 7 AM outside designated areas, with fines up to 600 euros. Following criticism, an exception was added: in most areas except nature reserves, overnight stays are now permitted for up to 48 consecutive hours, but this mainly applies to motorhomes rather than camper vans.
Portuguese motorhome rental sector at risk due to high vehicle tax
Portuguese motorhome rental and sales companies warn that the Vehicle Tax (ISV) is suffocating the sector. The tax rate in Portugal is 60%, compared to 0% in Germany and France, and below 10% in Spain. This disparity is forcing businesses to relocate investments abroad and jeopardizing around 2,000 jobs.
