Caravanning is gaining popularity in Slovakia. Campsites are upgrading their facilities, and water parks and swimming pools are attracting more visitors. Association of Water Parks, Pools and Baths president Gabriel Somogyi and SACC vice-president for camping Zuzana Trúchla noted that this season's trends include service modernization and expanded options for caravanners.
Rising hotel and flight costs are driving European families toward van-life. Converted vans now offer comfort comparable to expensive caravans at a fraction of the price. A basic setup with sleeping for two, solar panel, and compact kitchen starts at €15,000; a premium version with heating and insulation costs up to €30,000, while integrated caravans start at €50,000.
Organizers of the Slovak Pohoda 2026 festival announced additional parking capacity. Starting June 16, 240 spots at P1, 19 caravan spots, and 24 motorhome spots will go on sale. All spots are available for 4 days with a valid 3- or 4-day adult ticket.
A large category B rest area is to be built on the under-construction D1 motorway section between Hubová and Ivachnová. It will feature 42 parking spaces for cars, 49 for trucks, 8 for buses, and 2 for caravans, plus 6 EV charging points. Facilities for truck drivers include toilets, showers, a laundry, a kitchenette, and a ramp for removing snow and ice from vehicle roofs. Families will have a children's playground, rest areas, and a dog run. The motorway section is expected to open by September 2025, but the rest area's completion date is not yet set.
Volkswagen has introduced the Grand California, a larger camper van based on the Crafter platform. Compared to the T6 California, it offers increased living space, including a separate bedroom and a full bathroom. The model is designed for extended trips and self-sufficient travel.
The trend of glamping — luxury camping with comfortable tents equipped with beds, heating, and designer interiors — is growing. Critics argue that this format eliminates direct contact with nature, turning it into a backdrop. Supporters say glamping allows those unwilling to rough it to enjoy nature and offers a more sustainable alternative to hotels.
