Overnight rules for campers and motorhomes tightened in Portugal

Portugal has tightened regulations for overnight stays in motorhomes and camper vans. Since 2021, a law prohibits sleeping in a vehicle between 9 PM and 7 AM outside designated areas, with fines up to 600 euros. Following criticism, an exception was added: in most areas except nature reserves, overnight stays are now permitted for up to 48 consecutive hours, but this mainly applies to motorhomes rather than camper vans.

Authorities stated plans to create a new site, but it does not yet exist, while the old location is scheduled to host a Soup Festival in April 2026. Opponents argue this harms tourism and the local economy.
