Researchers at Flinders University (Australia) found that chemicals from caravan and motorhome toilets can disrupt local wastewater treatment plants. The study, published in the Journal of Environmental Management, highlights that deodorizers, cleaners, and disinfectants used in such toilets contain bronopol. This antimicrobial agent can suppress beneficial microorganisms essential for wastewater processing. A survey of 160 caravan owners revealed that 65% use these products regularly, and 83% follow recommended dosages. However, during peak tourist seasons, the cumulative chemical load may overwhelm smaller regional treatment facilities, potentially reducing treatment efficiency and harming the environment.
