Motorhome trip in 2026: costs rise by 400 euros

The cost of a motorhome trip to France in 2026 has increased by approximately 400 euros compared to 2025, mainly due to higher road tax and fuel prices. Road tax for motorhomes doubled from 25% to 50% of the standard rate. For a diesel motorhome weighing about 2,950 kg in Utrecht, the quarterly tax is now 562 euros, up from 281 euros in 2025. Diesel prices rose from 1.80 to 2.49 euros per liter in the Netherlands. Total variable costs for a round trip (2,400 km, 14 nights) are estimated at 1,056–1,156 euros, including fuel (approx. 532 euros), camping (approx. 374.50 euros), and tolls (150–250 euros).

Insurance does not cover motorhome used for non-camping purposes

The Dutch disputes committee Kifid ruled that an insurer was justified in denying a claim from a motorhome owner who used the vehicle for living and daily commuting. According to the policy terms, coverage applies only when the vehicle is used for camping. The owner initially admitted to living in the motorhome, then changed his statement, but the committee considered this a retroactive attempt to obtain coverage.

Bicycle caravan shows how luxury has overtaken bike travel

Alpencamper has introduced the Eco Slide Out, a bicycle trailer with a slide-out section that expands the sleeping area to 1.40×1.96 m. The model weighs 52 kg, features 30 mm insulation, and offers optional solar panels, heating, shower, and toilet. The base price starts at CHF 8,350 (approx. €9,100). The concept highlights a trend toward equipping bike travel with motorhome-like comfort, though payload is limited and additional gear increases weight and complexity.
