How to read the plate
A Zambian plate has three letters, one to four digits and sometimes a final letter (ADD 4077 T). Under ZS 266 the front plate has red characters on white and the rear plate is yellow; on the left are ZAMBIA and the coat of arms. Officially the plate carries no region.

History
The format of three letters and digits dates from 1975, and ZS 266 plates with the coat of arms from the 2000s. According to an amateur reference, the first two letters of the series used to indicate the town of registration (AA for Lusaka … AV for Mansa); Wikipedia does not confirm this, so the town codes are marked as historical.
