How to read the plate
A Mozambican plate has three series letters, three digits and, as a separate group at the end, the two-letter province code (ACZ 259 MC, where MC is Maputo City). The rear plate has two lines: ABC on top, 123 MC below, with the national emblem top right. The code is that of the province of first registration and does not change when the owner moves; most plates are MC or MP (Maputo Province).

The current INATTER design has been used since about 2011. Before that the Portuguese colonial scheme MXX-99-99 remained, where the two letters after M marked the district or province of registration; a full list of those codes has not been found. Sources disagree on Cabo Delgado: CA according to the Portuguese and English Wikipedia, CD according to the German one.
