How to read the plate
A standard Namibian plate has black characters on yellow: N (Namibia), one to six digits (six with a dash) and at the end the one- or two-letter code of the registering authority, i.e. the town: N 123-456 W is Windhoek, S Swakopmund, WB Walvis Bay. Personalised plates (since 2007) have light blue characters on white, the owner's text, the flag and NA, with no town code.

History
The current system with town codes dates from the 1990s (NaTIS); new codes are added as offices open — in 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2023. Before independence, in the South West Africa era, plates followed the South African pattern with an SWA / T.. prefix; no detailed data on them is available.
