How to read the plate
A Myanmar plate has white characters on black. The top line holds the three-letter region or state code and, after a dash, the township number (MDY-14, YGN-38); below it in large type is the main number: a digit, a letter and four digits (1P-3574). The plate also carries a QR code, a serial number and a line with the car's make. Sources give two codes for Naypyidaw, NPT and NPW.

From 1999 to 2013 plates were in Burmese script and showed the region name in Burmese. In 2013–2021 they switched to Latin letters: a region code without a township number (YGN / 1A-1234). The current format with the township number has applied since 1 July 2021.
