How to read the plate
A private car plate in Laos is yellow: the province name is written in Lao on top, with two Lao consonants and four digits below (ຮຍ 8118). The region can only be read from that inscription — there is no Latin name or code on the plate. The first letter of the series shows the vehicle type, not the place. Other vehicle categories have white, blue or red plates.

History
Laos has issued plates since 1950; the current design dates from 2001. Xaisomboun Province was restored in 2013–2014 (it had been a special zone). Since 2024 electric cars get an extra EV sticker.
