How to read the plate
A Singapore car plate has the letter S, two more series letters (no I or O), 1–4 digits and a check letter at the end (SBA 1234 G). There is no region: the first letter gives the vehicle class — S for private cars, F for motorcycles, G for light goods vehicles, SH for taxis. The check letter is calculated from the series letters and digits using the LTA algorithm. The usual plate is white on black; a white front and yellow rear pair is also allowed.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The letter S once stood for Singapore in the shared system of the Straits Settlements and Malaya, alongside the Malaysian state letters; the S and SB…SY series ran until 1971. When SY ran out in 1972, the E series was issued, and from 1984 S returned with two series letters. SA was never issued to avoid confusion with Sabah's SA.
