Region on old plates
Current plates show no region; only old ones did.
Series and number
Letters and digits — the registration itself.
Since 2015 a Moldovan plate has three letters and three digits (LEL 979) and no region. On the left is a wide blue band with the Moldovan flag and MD; between the groups there is room for the inspection sticker. District codes appear on 1992–2015 plates: two letters on the left (BL AB 123 for Bălți), or a single C or K for Chișinău. These plates are still valid and very common.

History
Plates with a district code were issued from 1992 to 2015. The codes changed twice — in 1999, when counties were introduced, and in 2002, when districts returned — so some letters meant different units in different years. Since 1 March 2015 plates are issued without a region. Transnistria issues its own plates; TS, TG, GR, DB, CC, RB and SL are the Moldovan codes for that territory.
