How to read the plate
A Peruvian plate (since 2010) has three characters, a dash and three digits: ABC-123 or F5U-597, sometimes with a digit in the middle. PERU is written on top between the flag and a hologram sticker. The first letter is the SUNARP registry zone where the car is registered: A, B, C, D and F for Lima and Callao, P for Piura and Tumbes, T for La Libertad, V for Arequipa and so on. Zones group one or more departments, so the letter points to a zone rather than a single department; E is used for special plates.

The current plates have been issued since 1 January 2010 (DS 017-2008-MTC). In 1974–2009 the first letter gave the vehicle type and the second the region: A Tumbes, B Piura, H Arequipa, Z Cusco, while G, I, O and Q stood for Lima and Callao. Before 1973 plates showed the name of the city.
